“She is. Her entire tribe was wiped out by smallpox and only she survived. She was nineteen at the time and they took her back to the fort where I was stationed. I’d just completed my medical training and was full of enthusiasm. I wanted to help people, whites and Indians alike. I didn’t realize how badly the Indians were treated until I saw it firsthand.”
